Award-winning independent filmmakers Moon Seun and Kevin Geiger bring a wealth of artistic, technical, and production experience to their creative work at Simplistic Pictures.

Based in Los Angeles, this creative team produces fresh, innovative animation content while also lecturing internationally and directing The Animation Co-op: a non-profit organization supporting independent animation production. Their critically acclaimed animated short film “Henry’s Garden” has enjoyed a successful 4-year run on the film festival circuit, and they are currently in production on a new short film entitled “My Friend Shadow” while developing an animated feature with the working title of “A Daytime Story”.

Kevin Geiger is a 12-year veteran of Walt Disney Feature Animation, which he joined in 1995 to create articulated digital models for Disney’s groundbreaking 3D character piece: “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” segment of “Fantasia/2000”. Kevin is an experienced architect of efficient, flexible and scalable digital production pipelines. His Disney career has taken him through several development projects including WDFA’s digital human initiative, production work on films such as “Dinosaur” and “Reign of Fire”, and culminated in his role as front-end CG Supervisor on “Chicken Little” – where his team set a new bar for cartoony 3D character articulation. After supervising character R&D on Disney’s upcoming animated feature “Rapunzel”, Kevin left Disney to pursue his independent work full-time. Before his tour at Disney, Kevin Geiger was a technical director at Richard Edlund’s Boss Film Studios, where he did seminal 3D character work for the MGM release “Species” – the first feature film to direct a digital “actor” in real-time. Kevin has also taught computer graphics and digital applications in the Cal Arts Experimental Animation Department from 1995 through 2007.

Prior to founding Simplistic Pictures in 2000, Moon Seun was a Senior 3D EFX Animator at Dreamworks Animation Studios, where she played key roles on “The Prince of Egypt’s” Red Sea team and on “The Road to El Dorado” – setting new standards for CG animated water. Before Dreamworks, Moon worked at Digital Domain on visual effects for “The Island of Doctor Moreau”, developed the liquid metal shader for the stereoscopic “T2-3D: Battle Across Time ” stage film, and did early R&D for “Titanic”. Her work at Boss Film Studios as Digital Lighting Designer on “Species” featured development of the “wet look” shader for the 3D character Sil, as well as the overall digital lighting model for the film.

Moon Seun and Kevin Geiger met in 1984 at The Cleveland Institute of Art, where they collaborated on a variety of projects and exhibitions. Moon graduated at the top of her class with the First Agnes Gund Traveling Scholarship and a BFA degree in Metalsmithing and Photography. Kevin received his BFA degree in Painting and Sculpture, winning every departmental scholarship and award offered during his course of study. Following a fellowship at The Glassell School of Art in Houston, Moon and Kevin studied at The Ohio State University’s Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), where they were the first two Masters candidates accepted from OSU’s Department of Art. Their thesis film “Panopticon” featured an early use of the Renderman Shading Language, screening at SIGGRAPH and touring internationally.

Since 2003, Kevin and Moon have sponsored The Simplistic Pictures Animation Award, a financial aid prize granted annually to the creator of the Best Animation at The Cleveland Institute of Art’s E.M.I.T. Film Festival.
